According to Paige, nearly 100% of people in a community will come before a municipal judge at some point. Whether it’s for traffic violations, small claims, or minor criminal offenses, municipal judges have a direct impact on everyday lives. These judges handle cases that affect the community’s immediate legal landscape, making it essential for voters to be informed about their positions and rulings.
Furthermore, Paige noted that around 50% of a community’s residents may eventually face a district judge. These judges handle more serious matters such as civil disputes, family law cases like divorce and child custody, as well as criminal cases. The rulings of district judges can profoundly shape the outcomes of individuals’ lives, making it crucial to elect fair and qualified candidates.
While fewer people may encounter appellate court or state supreme court judges, Paige emphasized the importance of being aware of their decisions. These judges set legal precedents and review the fairness of lower court decisions, impacting the entire judicial system. “It’s important to know if these judges are fair in their decision-making,” Paige said.
Ultimately, Paige encourages everyone to do their homework before voting. Educating ourselves on the candidates ensures that we elect judges who will administer justice fairly and maintain the integrity of the court system.
