If you haven’t had the pleasure of dining at Tacos El Palomo in Okemah, OK, you’re missing out on some of the finest, authentic Mexican food in the area. This family-run restaurant has a rich history, and the story of its owners, Alex and Irma, adds even more heart to the delicious meals they serve.
The story of Tacos El Palomo traces back to the 1950s when Alex’s father, Isidro Davila, was just a ten-year-old boy. He began working for a local farmer, earning only two pigeons and four pounds of corn for a day’s work. Isidro’s mother, Sabina, would make fresh tortillas from the corn, feeding their family of nine, and the leftover corn went to the pigeons, who soon gathered on the roof of their home. Isidro was affectionately nicknamed “Palomo,” meaning pigeon, by the townspeople. When he married his wife, Lupita, she was lovingly called Paloma (Dove). The couple passed down values of hard work, family, and compassion to their children, including Alex, who grew up with the nickname “Palomito” (Little Pigeon).
Years later, Alex and Irma began their journey into the restaurant world by selling tacos out of a small trailer in Okemah. Their food quickly became a local favorite, and they decided to honor Isidro’s legacy by naming their business Tacos El Palomo. As their customer base grew, Alex and Irma moved from the trailer into a permanent restaurant location, continuing to provide their community with the same quality meals and friendly atmosphere.
A standout on the menu are Irma’s mother’s homemade tamales, which are a must-try for anyone visiting. For those who enjoy a little extra heat, they even offer “Hot tamales on special request.” Tacos El Palomo has become more than just a restaurant—it’s a place where locals and visitors alike can gather for a meal made with love and tradition.
Next time you’re in Okemah, stop by Tacos El Palomo, enjoy their authentic Mexican flavors, and make sure to say hello to Palomitos!
