About Pastor Buskirk

Being a pastor is something I have definitely been called to do.  I wasn’t certain of that early on.  I was an ordinary guy (still am), talked in normal tones (still do) and didn’t have the big hair or inclination to pretense I thought it required (still don’t).  But I was blessed with many good friends growing up in this area, graduating from Jenks and then ORU.   That circle of friends was really my first experience of “church.”  I got a front-row seat to watch God enrich our lives.  Why couldn’t the church be the place you regularly get together with some of your best friends?  Shouldn’t the church be authentic, relationally rich, filled with laughter, learning, love and making a real difference together?  I think so.

In 1999, my wife, Cheryl, and I moved back to Tulsa from Houston and founded Abiding Harvest as a new (United Methodist) church plant.  I had been a youth director and pastor in Georgia following seminary (Candler, Emory University, in Atlanta).  Served as an associate pastor in some large churches (FUMC of Tulsa, and FUMC, Houston).  Upon returning to Tulsa, we soon had 3 children to include in the adventure, Courtney and the twins; David and Jonathan.

Since then we have been making friends and helping them get connected to one another and to our best friend, Jesus Christ.  That’s not cliché.  It’s the honest truth.  I don’t know the view from your life, but mine rarely looks easy.  I want a real connection with a real God that I can really rely on to sustain me as a man, a father, a husband, a pastor, a friend and a believer learning what it means to live a life that makes me and my God smile.  I cannot afford a pretentious faith.  I’ve learned not to trust myself that much.  But I do trust in Jesus.  I couldn’t care for you and not urge you to put your trust in Him too.  It’s not easy.  But it is so worth it.  It’s revolutionary!  It’s more an art than a science.  And the good news of Abiding Harvest is you don’t have to go it alone.  God will meet you here.  Friends will embrace you here.  And together, the adventure continues.  We would love to have another friend along for the ride.  See you Sunday!
