Electrical Trades Training Opens Doors at Wes Watkins Technology Center

The demand for skilled electricians continues to grow, and students at Wes Watkins Technology Center are getting the hands-on training needed to take advantage of those opportunities.

In a recent YCCUON interview, Jerry Riley visited the Electrical Trades program at Wes Watkins Technology Center and spoke with new instructor Esau Valdez and adult student Anthony Howell about the program, the training students receive, and the career opportunities available in the electrical field.

Valdez, who brings approximately 16 years of experience in the electrical trade, explained that students begin with safety and the fundamentals of electricity before progressing to wiring devices, lighting, hands-on projects, and eventually skills such as conduit bending. Students are prepared for opportunities in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work.

The complete program consists of approximately 1,000 hours of training. Adult students attending full time can complete the program in two semesters, while high school students attending half days generally complete it over four semesters. Graduates can begin their career as electrical apprentices and continue working toward journeyman and contractor licensing.

Howell also shares his perspective as an adult returning to school and says the hands-on instruction and support from the staff have made the experience especially valuable. His story is a reminder that it is never too late to learn a new trade and pursue a new career.
