Sheriff Hutson Addresses Misinformation About Millage Renewal at Community Meeting
Sheriff Susan Hutson recently hosted a community event to address what she described as misinformation surrounding the upcoming millage renewal vote.
The controversy stems from yard signs urging residents to vote “No,” portraying the millage as a new tax. Hutson was clear in her remarks, stating, “I don’t deal with lies. It is a lie. This is a renewal, and it is critical to public safety.”
Supporting Hutson’s statement, Pastor Jacques Williams emphasized that the millage is not a new tax, but a continuation of existing funding that supports the sheriff’s office operations. “We have had an opportunity to see that all the resources and all the funding that come through this method are used to provide the type of safety and provisions so that we could feel comfortable sleeping in our own homes,” Williams said.
In addition to supporting public safety, several attendees noted that the millage funding helps sustain education and job training programs for inmates. These programs are designed to reduce recidivism and provide opportunities for a successful reentry into society.
HISET Instructor Brian Comboh stressed the long-term impact of these initiatives, saying, “Once someone has been educated, they will remain educated. This puts tools on their belt. So, when they get out, they can find work. If you want to stop recidivism, education is where it’s at.”
According to national studies, education programs for inmates can reduce recidivism by up to 43%, highlighting how investments in education benefit both individual lives and the overall safety and economic health of the community.
Sheriff Hutson and community leaders reiterated that the millage renewal is essential for maintaining critical services without raising taxes and encouraged all residents to support the measure to ensure continued progress for Orleans Parish.
